Hyperplastic Polyposis and the smoking paradox in females

چکیده
Background Smoking has consistently been associated with the development of polyps in the colorectum. However the association between smoking and cancer of the colorectum is less than consistent, a phenomenon known as “the smoking paradox”. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the link between smoking and polyps is strongest in hyperplastic polyps, and in the subset of cancers which develop from hyperplastic polyps. Therefore, given that hyperplastic polyposis is associated with an increased risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC), the aim of this work was to investigate the association between smoking and the risk of CRC in these high-risk patients.

Alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, and risk of colorectal adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps.
The authors evaluated alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking in relation to risk of colorectal polyps in a Nashville, Tennessee, colonoscopy-based case-control study. In 2003-2005, cases with adenomatous polyps only (n = 639), hyperplastic polyps only (n = 294), and both types of polyps (n = 235) were compared with 1,773 polyp-free controls. Unordered polytomous logistic regression was used to ...

Purpose. To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of hyperplastic and adenomatous colorectal polyps in a Taiwanese general population. Methods. From January 2009 to December 2011, consecutive asymptomatic subjects undergoing a routine health check-up were evaluated by colonoscopy. The colorectal polyps were assessed, and medical history and demographic data were obtained from each patient...
متن کاملTobacco smoking and colorectal hyperplastic and adenomatous polyps.
Colorectal adenomas and possibly some hyperplastic polyps are precursors of colorectal cancer. Tobacco use is associated in epidemiologic studies with these polyps, although links between smoking and colorectal cancer are less consistent. To characterize the role of tobacco in early colorectal carcinogenesis, we compared tobacco use among 4,383 subjects with histologically verified benign (hype...
متن کاملPhenotypic characterization and familial risk in hyperplastic polyposis syndrome.
BACKGROUND. Hyperplastic polyposis syndrome (HPS) is a rare condition characterized by numerous hyperplastic polyps (HP) with a pancolonic distribution. Genetic and environmental factors, including smoking, may be responsible for phenotypic differences. OBJECTIVE. To characterize HPS patients' phenotype and to determine HPS risk and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in the first-degree relatives (FD...

AIM To investigate the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and colorectal adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps. METHODS A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 3686 individuals undergoing health checkups (2430 males and 1256 females). All subjects underwent laboratory testing, abdominal ultrasonography, colonoscopy, and an interview to ascertain the ba...
